What it is

Review generation is the deliberate practice of asking happy customers to leave a review, at the right moment, through the lowest-friction path you can offer. It’s the other half of review management: monitoring and responding handles the reviews you have; generation makes sure fresh ones keep arriving.

Why it matters for local SEO

Review signals — volume, recency, rating, and diversity of sources — feed directly into local rankings, and the rating shown beside your listing feeds directly into whether searchers pick you. A profile whose last review is two years old reads as a business in decline, to Google and to customers alike. Steady recency beats occasional bursts.

How to do it

  1. Ask at the peak of satisfaction: right after the job is done, the meal is finished, the problem is solved. The ask converts best while the experience is fresh.
  2. Make it one tap. Use your Google review link (a short URL from your Business Profile), a QR code at the counter, or a link in the receipt or follow-up message.
  3. Systematize the ask — a follow-up email or SMS a day after service, sent to every customer, not just the delighted ones you remember to ask.
  4. Spread reviews across platforms over time: Google first, then Yelp, Facebook, and the industry sites that matter in your niche.
  5. Reply to what arrives. Responding visibly makes the next customer likelier to write one.

Common mistakes

  • Buying reviews or reviewing yourself. Platforms detect it, and the penalty outweighs any gain.
  • Review-gating — asking only customers you’ve pre-screened as happy. It violates Google’s policies.
  • Incentivizing reviews with discounts or gifts, which most platforms prohibit.
  • Sending one giant blast that produces fifty reviews in a week and none after. Velocity spikes look manufactured; steady trickles look real, because they are.
